During his recent visit to Tamil Nadu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi underlined a new era of modernisation in India’s railway infrastructure.
Speaking at a public rally in Thoothukudi on Saturday, July 26, PM Modi declared Tamil Nadu a key centre for the railway modernisation drive.
“Our government is redeveloping 77 stations in Tamil Nadu under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme,” he said.
The Ministry of Railways launched the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS) in 2022 as a comprehensive initiative aimed at developing and upgrading railway stations across India.
The scheme envisions transforming stations into modern, accessible, and passenger-friendly hubs that serve as efficient transport nodes.
The plan involves the creation of detailed master plans for stations, emphasising multimodal connectivity, improved accessibility, and sustainable infrastructure.
The objective is to make railway stations cleaner, safer, and equipped with world-class facilities that meet the evolving needs of passengers.
The government introduced the ABSS to address the long-standing need for upgrading ageing and overcrowded stations across India.
After the revamp, the authorities will provide stations with enhanced circulating areas, spacious waiting halls, clean and modern toilets, lifts, escalators, and free Wi-Fi access.
Additionally, the scheme includes executive lounges and designated business meeting spaces. It also features improved landscaping and amenities tailored to each station’s passenger volume and location.
This approach aims to provide a seamless and comfortable travel experience for all.
The Ministry of Railways is implementing the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme in phases.
The Ministry of Railways has identified over 1,300 stations nationwide for development under the ABSS.
These stations range from major junctions to regional hubs, ensuring that benefits reach both metropolitan and smaller towns.
In May 2025, PM Modi inaugurated 103 redeveloped stations across 86 districts in 18 states and Union Territories.
The redevelopment of these stations involved a collective investment exceeding ₹1,100 crore. This highlights the government’s commitment to modernising railway infrastructure on a large scale.
The first phase covered a diverse range of stations, incorporating state-of-the-art facilities designed to improve passenger comfort and operational efficiency.
Tamil Nadu’s 77 stations, earmarked under the scheme, will see significant upgrades aligned with the broader national vision.
The Amrit Bharat Station Scheme aims to transform railway stations into vibrant hubs that boost regional connectivity and support economic growth.
The initiative will integrate multimodal transport options and enhance passenger amenities.
This will revolutionise rail travel and support the nation’s sustainable development goals.
PM Modi’s emphasis on Tamil Nadu highlights the state’s strategic role in India’s transport network.
It also shows the government’s commitment to modern, inclusive infrastructure, benefiting millions of travellers daily.
