Adani Power Wins Greenfield 2,400 MW Ultra‑Supercritical Plant In Bihar; $3 Billion Investment To Drive Growth

Adani Power Ltd. has secured a Letter of Intent (LoI) from Bihar State Power Generation Company Ltd (BSPGCL) to develop and operate a greenfield ultra-supercritical thermal power plant of 2,400 MW (3×800 MW) capacity at Pirpainti, Bhagalpur district.

The plant will supply 2,274 MW of electricity to North and South Bihar Power Distribution Companies.

Emerging as the lowest bidder in a fiercely competitive tender, Adani Power quoted a tariff of ₹6.075 per kWh. The company plans the $3 billion project under the Design, Build, Finance, Own, and Operate (DBFOO) model.

The project will bolster industrial growth, deliver affordable and dependable power, and play a key role in Bihar’s economic development.

“With our upcoming ultra-supercritical, high-efficiency Pirpainti project in Bihar, we are setting new benchmarks in operational excellence and sustainability”, said SB Khyalia, Adani Power’s CEO.

Employment & Timeline

Adani Power estimates that the construction will generate between 10,000 and 12,000 direct and indirect jobs, followed by around 3,000 positions once operational.

The company expects to commission Unit 1 within 48 months and plans to commission the final unit by the 60-month mark. The Government of India will supply fuel under the SHAKTI Policy coal linkage.

The Pirpainti project emerges amid rising interest from other major players such as JSW Energy, Torrent Power, and Bajaj’s Lalitpur Power, all competing for this mega 2,400 MW project, the largest private sector power investment in Bihar to date.

Robust industrialisation and urban expansion will drive India’s overall power demand to climb sharply. It is expected to rise from around 250 GW at present to 400 GW by 2031–32. This demand will further exceed 700 GW by 2047.

The government plans to add 100 GW of thermal capacity by 2035 to meet the base-load and grid balancing needs.

Once operational, the Pirpainti power plant will reinforce Bihar’s energy security and substantially reduce dependence on external electricity sources.

The project promises affordable, uninterrupted power to households and industries alike at a competitive tariff. This will accelerate the state’s industrial ambitions and improve the quality of life.
