Adani Ports’ Colombo Terminal Doubles Capacity To 3.2 Million TEUs

Sri Lankan Prime Minister Dr Harini Amarasuriya on Thursday inaugurated the $750 million Phase II expansion of Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone’s (APSEZ) Colombo West International Terminal (CWIT), doubling its capacity from 1.6 million to 3.2 million TEUs.

The expansion strengthens CWIT’s role in Colombo’s maritime infrastructure and supports the port’s target of handling 13 million TEUs by 2028.

With the increased capacity, CWIT aims to handle nearly 25 per cent of Colombo Port’s projected container volumes.

APSEZ Whole-Time Director and CEO Ashwani Gupta said the investment reflected confidence in the terminal and global shipping lines. He said the expansion, combined with automation and deep-water infrastructure, would strengthen CWIT’s position as a major transhipment gateway and support Sri Lanka’s export-import cargo.

CWIT has recorded rapid growth since beginning operations. It became the fastest terminal to handle 1 million TEUs within its first year in 2024 and reached 2 million TEUs within 18 months.

Amarasuriya said the terminal’s performance and expansion showed how modern infrastructure and international partnerships could support Sri Lanka’s economic development. She said investments such as CWIT were creating jobs, attracting international trade and strengthening the country’s ambition to become a leading maritime and logistics hub in the Indian Ocean.

The expanded terminal can berth three ultra-large container vessels, strengthening Colombo’s East-West trade route.

CWIT, Sri Lanka’s first fully automated deep-water terminal, uses fully electrified, zero-tailpipe-emission operations.

John Keells Group Chairperson Krishan Balendra said the 2 million TEU milestone reflected the partnership’s success and would further strengthen Colombo as a regional trade hub.
