Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Limited (APSEZ), India’s leading port developer and operator, has secured the letter of intent (LOI) for the operation and maintenance (O&M) of the container facility at the Netaji Subhas Dock, located within the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port in Kolkata.

This significant development marks APSEZ’s entry into the largest container handling facility on India’s east coast.

Meanwhile, APSEZ won the five-year O&M contract through competitive bidding, requiring them to deploy cargo handling equipment within seven months from the LOA date.

Netaji Subhas Dock, the focal point of this agreement, stands as the largest container terminal on the eastern coast of India.

In the fiscal year 2023-24 alone, it handled approximately 0.63 million TEUs, catering to a wide hinterland including West Bengal, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Assam, as well as the neighboring countries of Nepal and Bhutan.

The strategic location of Kolkata port, as the nominated port for the Indo-Bangladesh Protocol on Inland Water Transit and Trade route, underscores its regional significance.

Netaji Subhas Dock also receives regular liner service calls from prominent hub ports such as Singapore, Port Kelang, and Colombo.

APSEZ’s involvement at the dock is poised to enhance connectivity between the terminal and its container ports, particularly with the transshipment hubs at Vizhinjam and Colombo, both targeted for commissioning during the year.

Ashwani Gupta, Whole-Time Director and CEO of APSEZ expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “The award of the O&M contract for container handling facilities at Netaji Subhas Dock to APSEZ underlines our commitment to develop ports and logistics infrastructure across the country and the potential we see in West Bengal.”

With over two decades of experience in efficiently managing various container terminals within India and internationally, APSEZ aims to leverage its expertise for the benefit of customers and the local populace.

Adani Ports & Special Economic Zone Limited

Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ) is a crucial segment of the globally diversified Adani Group, having evolved from a port company to an Integrated Transport Utility providing end-to-end solutions from its port gate to customer gate.

It stands as the largest port developer and operator in India, boasting strategically located ports and terminals on both the west and east coasts.

APSEZ’s vision extends beyond port operations; it aims to become the largest ports and logistics platform globally in the next decade.

In line with its commitment to sustainability, APSEZ was the first Indian port and the third globally to sign up for the Science-Based Targets Initiative, pledging emission reduction targets to combat global warming.
