Adani Green Energy Strengthens Nature-Positive Leadership With Global Biodiversity Framework

Adani Green Energy Limited (AGEL), India’s largest renewable energy company, has formally integrated the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) framework into its enterprise-wide sustainability strategy.

The move marks a significant step towards a nature-positive model of renewable energy development. It ensures that ecological well-being advances alongside the expansion of clean energy.

The TNFD framework, established by global organisations including the United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative, the UN Development Programme, the World Wildlife Fund, and Global Canopy, provides a structured, science-based approach for identifying, assessing, managing, and disclosing nature-related dependencies, impacts, risks, and opportunities.

AGEL has pledged to achieve No Net Loss of Biodiversity by 2030, backed by plans to plant 27.86 million trees across its project locations.

This initiative aligns with AGEL’s participation in the India Business Biodiversity Initiative (IBBI and IBBI 2.0). It also reinforces the company’s ecological stewardship agenda.

CEO Ashish Khanna stated, “Nature is central to our growth story. By embedding TNFD principles into operations, we aim to build resilient ecosystems alongside renewable infrastructure, ensuring renewable expansion actively contributes to protecting and restoring natural capital.”

Building on Robust ESG Credentials

AGEL’s adoption of the TNFD framework builds on its strong environmental, social, and governance (ESG) credentials.

The company operates certified water-positive sites, maintains single-use plastic-free operations, and ensures zero waste-to-landfill at all facilities.

These initiatives highlight AGEL’s integrated approach to sustainability and corporate responsibility.

With an operating renewable portfolio of over 16.5 GW across 12 states, AGEL is developing large-scale solar, wind, hybrid, and energy storage solutions.

The company aims to reach 50 GW by 2030, supporting India’s decarbonisation goals.

AGEL is also developing a 30 GW renewable energy plant on 538 square kilometres of barren land in Khavda, Gujarat. This project will make it the world’s largest renewable energy facility of its kind.

By mainstreaming TNFD principles, AGEL positions itself as a global leader in integrating biodiversity into strategic decision-making.

The company also promotes sustainable growth in India’s renewable energy sector.
