India’s UPI story is moving beyond domestic convenience towards a larger question in international payments: can instant digital rails connect the BRICS economy more directly? The answer remains unsettled, but recent policy signals show that UPI-BRICS cross-border payments are now part of an active discussion on faster, cheaper remittances and trade settlement for NRIs and businesses.

What Is Being Proposed for Cross-Border Payments?

BRICS countries are discussing links between fast payment systems and central bank digital currencies. Speaking at FIBAC 2026, RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra said the goal was to reduce costs and improve the speed of cross-border payments. He also made clear that the initiative remains at the discussion stage and is not yet a fully launched alternative to SWIFT.

The idea builds on the BRICS Cross-Border Payments Initiative, which leaders asked Finance Ministers and central bank governors to continue examining in the July 2025 Rio de Janeiro Declaration. The declaration highlighted interoperability as a route towards payments that are faster, lower-cost, more accessible, transparent and secure.

Why NRIs Are Watching UPI Integration

For NRIs, the practical promise is straightforward: fewer delays, clearer fees and a more familiar payment experience when sending money to India or paying Indian merchants. UPI already supports a wide range of domestic payment use cases, while selected NRI access is available through international mobile numbers linked to NRE or NRO accounts in eligible countries.

If BRICS payment interoperability advances, it could reduce remittance corridors’ dependence on multi-step correspondent banking chains. This would benefit workers, students and families receiving financial support. Small businesses could also gain from more predictable settlements and shorter waiting periods.

Key developments to watch include:

  • Whether BRICS members agree on common technical standards for linking fast payment systems.
  • How foreign exchange conversion, dispute resolution and compliance checks are managed.
  • Whether UPI services for NRIs expand beyond current bank, app and country limitations.
  • How local-currency settlement is balanced with capital controls and anti-money-laundering requirements.

UPI’s Global Footprint Gives India Leverage

India is entering these discussions with considerable scale. A PIB backgrounder stated that UPI processed 2,365.8 crore transactions worth Rs 29.87 lakh crore in July 2026. The platform had 741 banks live on the network during the month. The backgrounder further said UPI was available in 11 foreign countries for acceptance and/or cross-border remittances, including developments in 2026 involving Cambodia, Greece and the Maldives.

That track record gives India a working model for digital payments interoperability. However, a BRICS payment bridge would be more complex than tourist QR-code acceptance. It would require sovereign coordination, settlement rules, data safeguards and trust among very different financial systems.

What Happens Next?

India will host the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi on September 12–13, 2026. The summit will follow the theme, ‘Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability’. Financial cooperation remains one of the grouping’s core pillars, making payments a natural subject for further discussion.

For now, NRIs should view the UPI-BRICS bridge as a developing policy direction rather than an available remittance product. Its potential will become clearer if initial discussions lead to interoperable corridors. These corridors would need to be offered at scale by banks and payment applications.
