Dunith Wellalage, a youthful spinner, received accolades from both experts and fans for his performance when India’s cricket team overcame Sri Lanka to secure their place in the Asia Cup 2023 final. The valuable wickets of Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, and Rohit Sharma were part of his impressive five-wicket haul. He then played a valiant inning of 42 from 46 deliveries to nearly lead his team to victory. Wellalage earned huge appreciation from renowned Sri Lankan pacer Lasith Malinga despite coming up short.
Malinga commented on Wellalage’s overall performance on social media, saying it appeared as though Sri Lanka was fielding 12 players. He also projected that Wellalage might become a major star in the future.
“I think it’s safe to assume that SL played today with 12 guys. That is how talented Dunith was, according to Malinga on X (formerly Twitter). Along with his broad range of abilities, he also has a great mind on his youthful shoulders. For the upcoming ten years, I think he will be the most crucial player for Sri Lanka in ODIs.
It’s fair to say that SL played with 12 players today. That’s how good Dunith was👏
He’s got a brilliant head on his young shoulders to go with his all-round skill set.
I believe he’s on his way to becoming the most important player for SL in ODIs for the next decade❤️#INDvSL— Lasith Malinga (@malinga_ninety9) September 12, 2023
“Virat Kohli is the top batsman in my opinion. I’m overjoyed to have gotten those two key wickets from Kohli and Rohit. In the post-game press conference, Wellalage stated, “I believe in my fundamentals and myself.
The 20-year-old claimed he was going up against some seasoned batters and was attempting to bowl a wicket-to-wicket line.
“India had a great start, and the batters were ready. I only made an effort to bowl wicket to wicket. We were able to put India under strain once we took those three wickets in just three overs.
“The ball had a turn, and if you placed it in the correct spot, you might frighten the batting lineup. But a victory would have made me happier,” Wellalage said.
