Rahul Gandhi, a prominent leader of the Congress party, embarked on a motorcycle journey to Pangong Lake in eastern Ladakh on Saturday. He is set to spend the night in a tourist camp. Party insiders reveal that Rahul intends to commemorate the birthday of his father and former Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi, on August 20th, at Pangong Lake. During his inaugural trip to Ladakh on Friday, Gandhi engaged in an interactive session with a crowd of more than 500 young individuals in Leh.

Tsering Namgyal, Congress’ spokesperson for the Leh district and the leader of the opposition in the LAHDC-Leh, said, “Rahul Gandhi had a 40-minute-long interactive session with over 500 youth in a jam-packed auditorium in Leh on Friday.”

The Congress leader arrived in Leh on Thursday for a two-day sojourn in the region, which has now been extended until August 25th. Gandhi’s visit to Ladakh since the revocation of Article 370 in 2019 comes before forthcoming elections for the 30-member Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC)-Kargil, as well as the upcoming general elections scheduled for the following year.

Ahead of the Kargil hill council polls set for September 10th, the Congress party and the National Conference have forged a pre-poll coalition against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Party representatives also hinted that given the alliance between Congress and National Conference for the Kargil polls, Rahul might convene a meeting with party leaders from Kargil during his visit.
