Two men were sentenced to a 20-year imprisonment term for their involvement in the gang rape of a pregnant woman in the Bapatla district in 2022, as confirmed by the police. P Vijaya Krishna and P Nikhil, hailing from Repalle town, were handed the lengthy prison sentence by the Guntur Additional District and Sessions Court on Wednesday.
“The accused were found guilty and swiftly sentenced to 20 years of imprisonment within the span of a year. The Director General of Police personally supervised this case,” stated Bapatla Superintendent of Police, Vakul Jindal. Jindal, who oversaw the investigation, also added that this case was monitored closely to ensure justice.
According to police reports, the victim, accompanied by her husband and children from Yerragondapalem mandal in Prakasam district, arrived at Repalle Railway station around 11.30 pm on April 30, 2022. They were en route to Nagayalanka village in Krishna district for work as labourers. Due to the late hour, the family slept on the platform. In the early hours of May 1, 2022, Krishna and Nikhil woke them, initiated a confrontation with the victim’s husband, and robbed him of some money. Subsequently, they forcibly moved the woman to the platform’s periphery, where they took turns in committing the heinous act.

In the meantime, the victim’s husband managed to escape and rushed to Repalle police station to file a complaint. As the police made their way to the scene of the crime, the perpetrators fled. However, the police succeeded in apprehending them within a few hours and securing their conviction within a year, ensuring a swift and effective judicial process, according to Jindal.
Additionally, the Superintendent of Police highlighted that the Director General of Police (DGP) K Rajendranath Reddy has instituted a Court Trial Monitoring System throughout the state. This system is designed to prevent those accused of crimes related to women, POCSO, and other serious offences from evading justice. The SP emphasized that this approach would substantiate such cases with scientific evidence.
