Sub-inspector Paotinsat Guite gave his life in battle against the Pakistani army on the Line of Control in 2020; in 2022, he was awarded the Kirti Chakra in recognition of his bravery. Now, the BSF has made it a priority to defend the hamlet of their deceased coworker and has stopped criminal attempts to destroy the surviving homes. BSF sub-inspector Paotinsat Guite lived in the now-protected village of Manipur in Maphou Village and was killed on December 1, 2020, while defending J&K from the Pakistani army at the Line of Control. On Independence Day in 2022, he received a posthumous Kirti Chakra for his gallantry in thwarting a terrorist push-in attempt by the Pakistani army.

As Meiteis leave Mizoram, tension extends to neighbouring northeastern states. The other nine villages in the block have all been completely destroyed, leaving only Maphou village standing. “Troops of 29 Bn BSF stationed at Maphou village have been successfully protecting the residence of SI Guite and will continue to do so. The village currently is abandoned except for some boys still guarding it. The elders and children have been shifted to a relief camp at Litan,” a BSF officer said.

The night of horror

Tongjang Guite, the soldier’s father, described how the community was attacked by hordes of attackers on May 30 while he was at a relief camp.  “It was around 2pm when about 1,000 armed men dressed in black attacked our village after burning down nine others. We had already sent our women, children, and the old to safety. The BSF (which was deployed in the vicinity and knew that the village was of their fallen colleague) rushed in and drove away the attackers. But by then almost 50 houses had already been razed,” the 55-year-old said.
