President Joe Biden breaks the Royal Code

The meeting between US President Joe Biden and King Charles on Monday at Windsor Castle seemed to violate royal protocol. Unless the prince initiates contact first, the President of the United States should not touch Charles’ arm or place his hand on his back. Prince Charles was “entirely comfortable” with the welcome, according to a Buckingham Palace source. “What a wonderful symbol of warmth and affection it was between both the individuals and their nations,” sources said.

Public must wait for royal to initiate a handshake

Grant Harrold, a former royal butler, has advised Insider that people in the public should always wait for a royal to shake their hand first.

“A royal handshake should consist of two-to-three pumps, with your palms open and thumbs down,” Mr Harrold said. “If you are a member of the public meeting a member of the royal family, you should never offer your hand to shake — wait for them to initiate the handshake.”

According to Mr Harrold, this is due to security reasons, “As well as an etiquette rule, it poses a major security risk if someone is able to get so close that they are able to touch members of the Royal Family.”

Even the Former First Lady made the mistake earlier in Buckingham Palace

After being schooled on proper royal decorum, former First Lady Michelle Obama made the infamous error of caressing the late Queen on the back. She later stated, nevertheless, that Her Majesty had called the procedure “rubbish” in person.

When former President Donald Trump strolled in front of the Queen during their meeting, royal observers gasped in disbelief, and Trump was mocked online. These guidelines appear to have been flouted more frequently in recent years as royals connect with the public in less formal ways.
