Centre Extends Fast Track Courts Scheme By Five Years, PM Modi Hails Quicker Justice

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday praised the extension of the Centrally Sponsored Fast Track Special Courts scheme, highlighting its focus on reducing delays in the judicial process.

“From less delay to faster justice!” PM Modi posted on X.

The programme carries a financial allocation of ₹3,788.04 crore, with ₹2,353.15 crore coming from the Centre and ₹1,434.89 crore from states and Union Territories.

The government will meet its share through the Nirbhaya Fund.

The extended initiative will increase the number of Fast Track Special Courts from 779 to 850.

Every court will have a dedicated judicial officer, a Special Public Prosecutor and six support personnel.

These teams will handle pending rape cases and offences under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012.

States and Union Territories will continue receiving central financial support for court operations.

The five-year continuation aims to speed up trials and reduce the backlog of cases involving sexual offences.

It will also support victim-friendly proceedings through Vulnerable Witness Deposition Centres and specially designed court facilities.

The Department of Justice will work with state and Union Territory administrations to implement the programme.

Authorities will decide where to establish additional courts based on district-level case pendency.

Officials will track progress through the FTSC Dashboard, reports, expenditure statements and consultations with High Courts.

The government launched the scheme on October 2, 2019, following the Criminal Law (Amendment) Act, 2018, and Supreme Court directions.

The programme currently operates in 29 states and Union Territories. Its 779 functional courts, including 399 exclusive POCSO courts, have collectively disposed of 4,02,457 cases.

The extension aims to strengthen judicial capacity and secure timely justice for women and children.
