Sri Lanka has renewed its assurance that it will not allow its territory to be used against India’s security interests.
The country’s High Commissioner to India, Mahishini Colonne, described the commitment as a key foundation for closer cooperation between the neighbouring nations.
Speaking at the Indo-Pacific Regional Dialogue 2026, Colonne stressed that the relationship extends beyond their shared maritime boundary.
“India and Sri Lanka share not only a sea but also security,” she said.
Colonne stated that Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake had assured Prime Minister Narendra Modi that Colombo would never permit its territory to be used in any manner detrimental to India’s security.
She said the commitment would support cooperation across multiple areas, including science, technology and maritime development.
“This commitment forms the foundation for scientific cooperation,” Colonne added.
India and Sri Lanka have expanded their relationship through investments, connectivity initiatives and security partnerships. New Delhi has also played an important role in supporting Sri Lanka’s recovery efforts.
Security remains a crucial element of bilateral engagement. The two countries have collaborated on maritime surveillance, intelligence sharing and efforts to prevent illegal activities across the Indian Ocean.
Colonne’s remarks highlight Sri Lanka’s intent to maintain strong ties with India amid growing competition for influence across the Indian Ocean Region.
Sri Lanka’s strategic location near major shipping lanes makes security cooperation particularly important for New Delhi.
The renewed assurance reinforces both countries’ commitment to regional stability and mutual security.
Their growing partnership also reflects shared interests in safeguarding maritime routes and strengthening cooperation across the wider Indo-Pacific region.
