More than 44,000 government buildings across India now use solar energy, generating annual savings of around Rs 700 crore, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Monday.
Addressing the Bharat Renewable Energy Summit in New Delhi, PM Modi highlighted India’s progress in renewable energy over the past 12 years. He said the government had expanded solar power access across industries, farms and households to strengthen energy security and promote clean energy.
“Over the last 12 years, we have worked to connect industries and farms with solar power. More than 44,000 government buildings across India are now connected to solar energy, generating annual savings of around Rs 700 crore,” he said.
The Prime Minister highlighted the benefits of the PM-KUSUM scheme. He said the initiative had provided solar-powered irrigation facilities to more than 30 lakh farmers. Each farmer could save around Rs 1 lakh annually by using solar pumps, according to government estimates.
The government aims to bring every government building, school, college, hospital and street-lighting system under solar energy, he added.

PM Modi highlighted the progress of the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, launched in February 2024. The scheme aims to install rooftop solar systems in one crore households. More than 65 lakh households have joined the initiative over the past 24-25 months, he said.
The Prime Minister said India achieved its target of sourcing 50 per cent of its installed electricity capacity from non-fossil fuel sources in 2025, five years ahead of its Paris Agreement deadline.
He added that non-fossil fuel sources now account for more than half of India’s installed power capacity.
