Kolkata Durga Puja Tragedy: Amit Shah Visits Hospital To Check On Stampede Victims

Union Home Minister Amit Shah visited a private hospital in Kolkata on Sunday to meet devotees injured in the stampede at a community Durga Puja pandal, which left 19 people dead.

During the visit, Shah spoke to hospital officials about the treatment and medical condition of the 14 patients admitted there. He also met several injured devotees whose health permitted them to interact with him.

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari and BJP state president and Rajya Sabha member Samik Bhattacharya accompanied the Home Minister.

Shah reached Kolkata on Saturday night for several Durga Puja-related engagements planned for Sunday. His schedule included a visit to Belur Math in neighbouring Howrah district, which serves as the international headquarters of the Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission, founded by Swami Vivekananda.

However, following the tragedy, Shah called off his planned engagements. He visited the renowned Kali temple at Kalighat in south Kolkata to offer prayers before proceeding to the hospital. He is expected to leave for New Delhi later in the day.

Shah Expresses Solidarity with Affected Families

The Home Minister shared details of his hospital visit on social media and prayed for the injured devotees.

“I visited the hospital and met with the devotees injured in the accident at the Chorbagan Public Durga Puja pandal in Kolkata and inquired about their well-being. In this difficult time, the West Bengal government stands firmly with every injured person and affected family. I pray to Mother Durga that all the injured recover swiftly,” he said.

State Health Minister Dr Saradwat Mukherjee said most of the 14 patients receiving treatment at the private hospital were stable and out of danger, although one required closer medical attention.

“Even the person whose condition is a bit serious, I will not use the word ‘crisis’ for him. I am hopeful that the death toll will not increase further. I am personally monitoring the treatment arrangements of the injured people,” Dr Mukherjee said.
