On the eve of World Mental Health Day, Delhi Teachers University (DeTU) successfully hosted an engaging and insightful lecture on mental health and well-being today at the DeTU Seminar Hall.
Tailored specifically for BA Education and MA Education learners, the timely event focused on equipping future educators with the emotional resilience and self-awareness needed for both personal growth and professional success.
After the welcome address by Dr Sanjeev Rai, Registrar, the keynote address was delivered by Dr Swati Mukerjee from DRDO, an eminent psychologist who shed light on the pressing mental health challenges confronting young adults today, including academic stress, anxiety and everyday pressures.
Dr Mukerjee underscored that true well-being goes beyond the absence of illness, requiring active self-reflection, positive self-talk and emotional fortitude. She provided practical coping mechanisms and urged students to break the stigma around seeking professional help.
Adding immense value to the discourse, Sanjay from the Harijan Sevak Sangh graced the occasion as a distinguished guest.
Sharing his profound insights, Sanjay emphasised the vital role of holistic development, social inclusivity and empathy in shaping resilient communities and compassionate educators.
A standout feature of the session was its highly interactive and safe format.
An innovative ‘place cards’ method encouraged open communication and allowed students to submit their queries and personal concerns anonymously.
Dr Mukerjee addressed each question with deep empathy and practical advice, creating a comforting, non-judgemental space that resonated strongly with the attendees.
Faculty members present, including Dr Rajesh Kumar, Dr Nasruddin, Dr Shallu, Dr Shagufta, Dr Richa and Dr Tania Sharma, noted that future teachers must first cultivate strong mental well-being to foster emotionally safe classrooms for their own future students.
The programme, however, concluded with a formal vote of thanks and a collective pledge to prioritise mental well-being across the campus community.
