Aloe vera can be a useful addition to your hair care routine, particularly for conditioning dry hair, managing frizz and soothing the scalp.
Growing the plant at home provides easy access to fresh gel, which you can combine with everyday ingredients to prepare simple hair masks.
To grow aloe vera, choose a pot with drainage holes and fill it with well-draining soil. Plant a rooted aloe vera pup and place the pot in a bright spot with indirect sunlight. Water it only when the soil dries out to prevent root damage.
Here are six aloe vera hair masks you can try at home.
- Fresh Aloe Vera Gel: Apply fresh aloe vera gel to your scalp and hair. Leave it on for 20–30 minutes before washing with a mild shampoo.
- Aloe Vera and Coconut Oil: Mix two tablespoons of aloe vera gel with one teaspoon of coconut oil. Apply the mixture to soften dry hair and improve manageability.
- Aloe Vera and Yoghurt: Combine aloe vera gel with two tablespoons of plain yoghurt. Apply it to your hair, leave it on for 20 minutes and rinse thoroughly.
- Aloe Vera and Onion Juice: Mix a small amount of onion juice with aloe vera gel and apply it to your scalp. Patch-test the mixture first, as onion juice can cause irritation.
- Aloe Vera Hair Spray: Dilute aloe vera gel with water and spray lightly onto damp hair to help manage frizz. Prepare small batches and refrigerate them.
- Aloe Vera and Olive Oil: Mix aloe vera gel with a little olive oil and apply it to the lengths of your hair. Leave it on for 20 minutes before shampooing.
Always patch-test these mixtures before use and discontinue them if irritation occurs.
Although aloe vera may help condition hair, it cannot guarantee hair growth or prevent hair loss.
Consult a dermatologist if you experience persistent scalp irritation or hair loss.
