Prime Minister Narendra Modi has completed 25 years of uninterrupted service as head of government, marking a significant milestone in India’s political journey.
He first assumed the post of Gujarat Chief Minister on October 7, 2001, before becoming Prime Minister in 2014. The Union Cabinet has recognised the milestone as 25 years of continuous leadership.
PM Modi surpassed former Sikkim Chief Minister Pawan Kumar Chamling’s record earlier this year to become India’s longest-serving head of an elected government. He crossed Chamling’s previous mark of 8,930 days in office.
The milestone also followed PM Modi’s achievement in June 2026, when he became India’s longest continuously serving elected Prime Minister after crossing Jawaharlal Nehru’s previous record of 4,398 days.
PM Modi’s political journey has taken him from leading Gujarat to heading the Union government. He secured three consecutive Lok Sabha mandates in 2014, 2019 and 2024, allowing him to continue his tenure at the national level.
His 25-year journey began amid challenges in Gujarat, where he took charge after the state faced an earthquake, droughts and political instability.
Long executive tenures have marked the careers of several global leaders, including Singapore’s Lee Kuan Yew, Cambodia’s Hun Sen and Malaysia’s Mahathir Mohamad. Germany’s Helmut Kohl and Angela Merkel also served more than 16 years as chancellors.
PM Modi’s latest milestone links his uninterrupted state and national leadership while reflecting his continued political longevity in the world’s largest democracy.
The Union government has described the journey as part of its broader vision of building a ‘Viksit Bharat’ by 2047.
