The Prime Minister’s Office highlighted a major breakthrough in India’s quantum technology landscape with the successful demonstration of the country’s first free-space Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) link spanning 5.56 km.
PMO India announced the achievement on X, spotlighting the demonstration by QNu Labs in collaboration with BISAG-N and IIT Gandhinagar. The technology transmitted quantum information through open air using photons, overcoming several limitations associated with conventional fibre-optic communication.

The demonstration maintained a quantum bit error rate below five per cent while generating secure cryptographic keys at a rate of 230–260 bits per second.
The system integrated post-quantum cryptography with QKD to strengthen end-to-end encrypted messaging and prepare communication networks for emerging quantum-era threats.
The breakthrough marks an important step towards deploying secure communication systems across environments where physical fibre links face geographical or infrastructural constraints.
Free-space quantum communication can transmit information across open-air paths, allowing secure connectivity even when conventional network infrastructure proves difficult to establish.
The achievement could strengthen India’s ambitions in quantum-secure communications by creating a technological foundation for longer-distance links and future satellite-based quantum networks.
Such networks could enable highly secure information exchange across vast distances while reducing vulnerabilities associated with conventional encryption systems.
The demonstration further supports India’s broader push to develop quantum-resilient digital infrastructure.
By combining QKD with post-quantum cryptography, researchers have demonstrated a layered approach to protecting sensitive communications against both present and emerging cyber threats.
The milestone positions India among countries advancing practical applications of quantum communication technology and strengthens the groundwork for secure, next-generation communication networks.
