The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) organised the Sukna Station Mahotsav to mark 146 years of the architectural heritage of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR), a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The event highlighted efforts to preserve the railway’s historic assets while encouraging community participation.

NFR General Manager Chetan Kumar Shrivastava and senior railway officials attended the celebration along with distinguished guests.

During the event, Shrivastava inaugurated the renovated Sukna Museum, which showcases the history and operational legacy of the DHR.

He also released the first DHR Collector’s Edition volume on its heritage and history.

Students from Narayana School, Siliguri and Sukna School presented cultural performances, while organisers held essay and drawing competitions.

The top three winners in each category received DHR certificates. Artist Ajay Sarkar also presented a live nail art demonstration and handed over the artwork to the Sukna Station Manager.

Following the celebrations, Shrivastava flagged off the 125-year-old heritage locomotive 780B along with a flat wagon restored after 36 years at the historic Tindharia Railway Workshop.

NFR also restored and reopened the Giddaypahar siding after 21 years to strengthen the DHR’s operational capacity.

A new Railway Protection Force (RPF) barrack at Giddaypahar was also inaugurated to improve facilities for security personnel.

The celebrations combined heritage preservation, infrastructure upgrades and community participation. Through the restoration of vintage rolling stock, renovation of heritage facilities and improvement of operational infrastructure, NFR continues to protect the DHR’s unique legacy and support its role in the region.

Headquartered at Maligaon near Guwahati, NFR operates across the northeastern states, seven districts of West Bengal and five districts of North Bihar.
