Indian boxer Lovlina Borgohain has set her sights on booking a place at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics as early as possible after winning gold at the Asian Games.
The 2027 World Boxing Championships in Kazakhstan will provide her with the first opportunity to begin the Olympic qualification journey.
The Boxing Federation of India has decided to give priority to Asian Games medallists for the World Championships, placing Lovlina among the leading contenders for the qualification pathway.
“We always try our best to qualify in the first qualification (chance) only. It is a very good thing for an athlete. The way hockey has done it, they will get a long time to prepare. Our target is to qualify in the first qualification, get a good time and get good results,” Lovlina told.
Lovlina said she is not treating her Asian Games victory as an opportunity to erase the disappointment of missing a medal at the Paris Olympics.
Instead, the boxer wants to celebrate the achievement and avoid putting additional pressure on herself.
India’s Boxing Depth Continues to Grow
Lovlina also pointed to a stronger competitive mindset among Indian boxers as a major factor behind the country’s recent medal-winning performances.
“So, the mindset has changed somewhere between our athletes. We have a champion mindset. That is why we are doing well. And we are getting support from the government. That is also the reason why our performance is good,” the boxer stated.
Lovlina said young athletes must maintain confidence in themselves regardless of outside opinions or setbacks.
She described hearing India’s national anthem while standing on the podium as a deeply special experience that represents the ultimate dream of athletes.
Lovlina will now look to convert her Asian Games success into an early Olympic berth and use the additional preparation window to sharpen her plans for Los Angeles.
