Indian captain Smit Machchhar, visibly emotional after receiving a telephone call from Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday, told him that he was his biggest idol and someone he had always looked up to.
The wounded flydubai pilot, who is recuperating at a hospital in the UAE, received a video call from PM Modi, who enquired about his health and wished him a speedy recovery.
PM Modi praised Machchhar’s valour and credited his actions with saving more than 170 lives aboard the flydubai flight and preventing what he described as a possible 9/11 attack.
Machchhar said the Prime Minister’s call made him extremely proud. He added that he had never imagined getting an opportunity to speak with Prime Minister Modi.
Captain Machchhar told the Prime Minister that he recites the Hanuman Chalisa whenever he faces difficult situations. He recalled reciting it when the co-pilot stabbed him inside the cockpit as he struggled to protect the passengers.
Prime Minister Modi later spoke to Machchhar’s mother, Geeta Ben, and praised the upbringing that instilled values and teachings from the Bhagavad Gita.
The Prime Minister assured Machchhar and his family of all possible assistance, including medical support during his recovery. He praised the captain’s courage and resourcefulness, which have drawn international attention.
Machchhar faced the attack during the flydubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv. Despite suffering serious injuries and collapsing, he managed to press the cockpit door latch and open the door.
The move allowed passengers to enter the cockpit and overpower the attacking co-pilot. Machchhar’s presence of mind and quick response helped save more than 170 people on board.
