Adani Green Energy Ltd (AGEL) has increased its operational Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) capacity to 6.63 gigawatt-hours (GWh) at Khavda, Gujarat. The company raised capacity from 3.55 GWh in June 2026.
AGEL now accounts for more than 50 per cent of India’s operational BESS capacity of around 12.6 GWh.
“Reaching 6.63 GWh of operational battery storage in just 14 months is a significant milestone for AGEL and India’s clean energy transition. At this scale, storage can make renewable power firmer, more reliable and dispatchable when the grid needs it,” said Sagar Adani, Executive Director, Adani Green Energy.
“As India’s power demand grows, we will continue to scale energy storage solutions, both battery and pumped storage, to support a more resilient, lower-carbon grid,” he added.
The 6.63 GWh BESS can store enough clean energy to power around two million homes daily. It can support peak electricity demand in cities such as Nagpur, Patna and Vizag for several hours.
The installation matches the battery storage capacity of more than 150,000 mid-sized electric vehicles. It can store nearly twice the estimated daily electricity requirement of the Delhi Metro.
AGEL said the expansion will strengthen renewable energy integration by storing clean power and releasing it when required. Khavda now hosts the world’s largest operational battery storage installation at a single location.
The BESS supports AGEL’s 30 GW renewable energy project across 538 sq km of barren land at Khavda. It uses lithium-ion batteries, Energy Management Systems and automated telemetry.
The technology manages charging and discharging, improves grid stability, handles peak demand and reduces renewable energy curtailment.
AGEL expects to add over 10 GWh of BESS capacity in FY 2026-27. It targets 50 GWh within five years.
