Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend the Centenary Celebrations of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi on Thursday. The programme will begin at 11 AM, with the Prime Minister also scheduled to address the gathering.
The event will mark the culmination of year-long celebrations that began on October 1 last year to commemorate 100 years since the establishment of the UPSC in 1926.
During the programme, PM Modi will release a UPSC Centenary Commemorative Coin, a commemorative stamp and a book titled 100 Landmark Judgements- Shaping the Policies of UPSC and Public Service Commissions in India.
The celebrations will bring together stakeholders from across the country, including chairpersons and members of State Public Service Commissions, senior government officials, academicians and UPSC officials.
The event is part of the UPSC’s two-day programme on September 30 and October 1.
The first day featured ‘Shatabdi Samaroh – Manthan’ at Bharat Mandapam, with expert addresses and panel discussions.
The UPSC traces its origins to the Government of India’s First Dispatch on Indian Constitutional Reforms, issued on March 5, 1919, which called for a permanent body to oversee civil services.
The Royal Commission on Superior Civil Services, led by Lord Lee, recommended a Public Service Commission in 1924. The government established the first commission on October 1, 1926, with Sir Ross Barker as chairman.
The Government of India Act, 1935, provided for a Federal Public Service Commission, which evolved into the UPSC after Independence.
The UPSC gained constitutional status on January 26, 1950. Established under Article 315, it has a chairman and 10 members and conducts recruitment exams for Union and All India Services.
