The TRAI spam call rules have been tightened to control unwanted calls and messages in India.
The new rules will use Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) to detect spam calls. Telecom companies will use these tools to find unusual calling patterns and suspected spammers.

TRAI has also introduced stricter action against repeat offenders. Suspicious numbers can be checked by telecom companies. Action may be taken if a violation is confirmed.
A new 1601 number series is being introduced for certain service and transactional calls. It will cover eligible organisations outside the banking, financial services and insurance sectors, along with government organisations.
The new number series will help users identify genuine service calls more easily.
TRAI has also strengthened the Do Not Disturb (DND) system. Consumers can use approved channels to report unwanted commercial calls and messages.
According to TRAI, more than 17 lakh spam complaints were filed through the DND app in 2025. More than 7.3 lakh notices were also issued to unregistered telemarketers.
Action has also been taken against entities involved in spam calls and misuse of telecom services.
The new TRAI spam call rules are aimed at faster spam detection and stronger consumer protection.
AI-based technology will play an important role in finding unwanted calls. The measures are also expected to improve coordination between telecom companies.
