If your plants are wilting, drying out or losing leaves, they may still recover with the right care.

Before giving up, try these seven simple steps to help a struggling plant regain its health.

  1. First, check whether the plant is still alive. Brown leaves and a dry stem do not always mean the plant has died. Gently scratch the stem and look for green tissue underneath. Healthy, firm roots can also indicate that the plant may recover.
  2. Next, remove dry, yellow or damaged leaves with clean scissors. If a branch has partly dried out, trim the damaged section while keeping the healthy part intact. This can help the plant direct its energy towards new growth.
  3. Pay attention to watering. Both too little and too much water can damage plants. If the soil remains wet for several days and the leaves turn yellow, allow it to dry and check whether the pot has adequate drainage.
  4. Old or compacted soil can also affect root health. Replacing it with fresh, well-draining soil can improve access to air and nutrients.
  5. Fungal problems may cause further deterioration. Remove affected sections, improve air circulation and avoid keeping the soil constantly wet. While cinnamon is sometimes used as a home gardening remedy, serious fungal infections may require suitable treatment.
  6. Adding compost can improve soil quality and provide nutrients. Banana peels are better added to compost rather than buried directly around plant roots.
  7. Finally, check the plant’s sunlight requirements. Different varieties need different levels of light, so place each plant accordingly.

With appropriate watering, healthy soil, suitable light and regular care, many struggling plants can produce fresh leaves and begin growing again.
