Nine passengers, including a woman, were killed after a double-decker sleeper bus caught fire on the Yamuna Expressway near Jewar in Greater Noida late Wednesday night.
The bus was carrying around 35 passengers when the blaze broke out, forcing several people to escape through its windows.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath took cognisance of the incident and expressed condolences to the families of those who died.
He directed officials to provide proper medical treatment to the injured and assured all possible assistance to the affected families.
Police and fire brigade teams reached the spot after receiving information about the blaze and launched rescue and relief operations.
Several passengers managed to escape as the fire spread rapidly through the bus. Emergency teams also worked to bring the blaze under control and evacuate those trapped inside.
The bus was travelling towards Uttar Pradesh when the fire broke out near Jewar. Most passengers were reportedly asleep when the blaze started, according to police sources.
The fire quickly engulfed the vehicle, leaving several passengers trapped inside.
The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation. A preliminary police assessment indicated that a short circuit in the bus’s air-conditioning system may have triggered the blaze, though authorities have not yet established the definitive cause.
Police have registered a case and are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. The driver and conductor have also been arrested, according to reports.
The incident has renewed attention on safety measures in long-distance sleeper and double-decker buses, particularly emergency exits, passenger evacuation arrangements and the handling of luggage. Authorities are continuing their investigation as further details emerge.
