World War Z Sequel Finally Moves Forward

After more than a decade of delays, Paramount Pictures has revived plans for a sequel to World War Z.

Brad Pitt will return as former United Nations investigator Gerry Lane, while Edward Berger, known for All Quiet on the Western Front and Conclave, will direct the film.

British writer Dennis Kelly will write the screenplay, while Brad Pitt will also produce the project through Plan B Entertainment. Paramount has not announced the film’s release date, supporting cast or detailed plot.

The sequel has gone through several changes since the original World War Z became a global hit in 2013.

JA Bayona initially joined the project before David Fincher took over as director. Fincher and Pitt developed a darker version of the story, but Paramount eventually stopped production plans in 2019 because of budget concerns.

Fincher later revealed that his version would have taken a more grounded approach, with elements similar to The Last of Us. His departure left the sequel stuck in development for years.

The original film followed Gerry Lane as he travelled across different countries while searching for a way to stop a rapidly spreading zombie outbreak.

The movie earned more than $540 million worldwide and established itself as one of Paramount’s major zombie franchises.

Now, Berger’s involvement gives the sequel a new creative direction while Pitt’s return reconnects the story with its original lead character.

Paramount continues to keep major details under wraps, leaving fans waiting for more information about the story, filming schedule and release date.
