The Department of Law at the University of Mumbai will host the ninth Chief Justice M C Chagla Memorial Lecture on Friday, September 18, 2026. Former Chief Justice of India Justice Bhushan R Gavai will deliver the keynote address. He will speak on ‘Human Rights and Sustainable Development Goals’ at 6 PM.
The department has organised the lecture in collaboration with the Chief Justice M C Chagla Memorial Trust.
The programme will be held at Rama and Sundari Watumull Auditorium, K C College, Churchgate, Mumbai.
The University of Mumbai carries an A++ accreditation from NAAC, with a CGPA of 3.65. The university’s Department of Law continues to host academic programmes focused on legal scholarship and public issues.
Vice-Chancellor Dr Ravindra D Kulkarni and Pro Vice-Chancellor Dr Ajay Bhamre will serve as patrons for the event. University Registrar Dr Prasad Karande will support the programme.
Dr Rajeshri N Varhadi, Head of the Department of Law, and Dr Rashmi M Oza, Chair Professor of the Department of Law and Chief Justice M C Chagla Chair, will oversee the academic event.
The memorial lecture honours the legacy of Chief Justice M C Chagla through discussions on significant legal and social themes.
Justice Gavai’s address will focus on the relationship between human rights and sustainable development. The subject brings together legal principles, social justice and development priorities.
The event will provide students, academics and legal professionals with an opportunity to engage with contemporary questions surrounding rights and sustainable development.
The ninth edition continues the university’s memorial lecture series while bringing a former Chief Justice of India before an academic audience in Mumbai.
