India’s concern is especially significant because of scale. A country with more than a billion people cannot treat digital infrastructure as a luxury layer above the ‘real’ economy. Identity, welfare delivery, small-business payments, health records, education access and public communication are increasingly digital. If those systems are dependent on external gatekeepers, the risk is not only economic. It touches sovereignty, civil liberties and social trust.

A practical stand against digital imperialism therefore requires more than slogans. The pandemic-era supply shocks and intensifying geopolitics around semiconductors made clear that hardware dependence can quickly become economic vulnerability.

India’s semiconductor push is therefore part of the broader project of de-weaponising technology. The Semicon India Programme was approved with a Rs 76,000 crore outlay to develop semiconductor and display manufacturing ecosystems in the country. The point is not that India can instantly replace every part of the global semiconductor chain. No major economy can do that easily.
