Delhi Weather: More Rain Likely Through August 16 As IMD Forecasts Heavy Showers

Delhi-NCR began Tuesday with overcast skies and refreshing winds, creating relatively pleasant conditions across the capital region.

The India Meteorological Department has indicated that light to moderate showers could continue in Delhi and nearby areas through August 16.

The weather department expects monsoon activity to intensify across various parts of the country from Tuesday.

Several regions, including the northwest, central, eastern, northeastern, and western parts of India, could experience heavy or very heavy rainfall, along with gusty winds, lightning, and thunderstorms.

The IMD has predicted fairly widespread to widespread rain across Delhi and Haryana on August 11, with another round expected on August 13. Isolated heavy rainfall could also affect Delhi, Haryana and Chandigarh on both dates.

The forecast has prompted caution as intense showers could result in waterlogging, sudden traffic congestion and temporary disruption to daily activities.

West Uttar Pradesh may receive heavy rain on August 11, 14 and 15, while East Uttar Pradesh could experience heavy showers from August 13 to 15.

Delhi recently experienced its highest August rainfall in two years, with the Safdarjung observatory recording 98.7 mm over the 24 hours ending at 8:30 AM.

Delhi last recorded higher August rainfall on August 1, 2024, when the city received 107.6 mm of rain.

Based on the 1991-2020 climate data, Delhi normally receives 226.8 mm of rain during August. The city’s rainfall total has already surpassed that benchmark by 3.3 mm.

Weather Systems

The ongoing rainfall is being influenced by several atmospheric systems, including a monsoon trough that continues to remain south of its usual position.

A low-pressure system situated over north Madhya Pradesh and surrounding areas is also affecting rainfall across central and northwest India.

An upper-air cyclonic circulation over the northwest Bay of Bengal and neighbouring areas could support the development of another low-pressure area around August 12. These systems are likely to keep rainfall activity elevated across Delhi-NCR and other parts of the country in the days ahead.
