Sensex and Nifty ended with modest gains on Thursday after a subdued trading session.

Investors remained cautious amid the evolving geopolitical situation in West Asia.

The Sensex rose 273.55 points, or 0.35 per cent, to close at 77,928.15. The Nifty gained 66.95 points, or 0.28 per cent, to settle at 24,317.15.

Market experts said the 24,300-24,400 range remains the immediate resistance zone for the Nifty.

Analysts said the Nifty must sustain a close above the 24,300-24,400 band to confirm stronger bullish momentum. They added that such a move could push the index towards the 24,500-24,600 resistance zone.

On the downside, experts identified 24,200 as the first support level, followed by the key psychological mark of 24,000.

Mahindra & Mahindra, Coal India and Eicher Motors emerged as the top gainers on the Nifty. Their gains helped the benchmark indices remain in positive territory despite mixed market performance.

The broader market, however, underperformed the frontline indices.

The Nifty MidCap index declined 0.35 per cent, while the Nifty SmallCap index fell 0.56 per cent.

Among sectoral indices, the Nifty Realty index recorded the sharpest decline and slipped 2 per cent.

The Nifty Chemical index also closed in negative territory and underperformed the broader market.

In contrast, the Nifty Auto, Nifty Oil & Gas and Nifty Consumer Durables indices outperformed and supported the benchmark indices.

Market participants remained cautious throughout the session as they tracked geopolitical developments in West Asia.

The uncertainty kept trading range-bound and restricted gains in the headline indices despite buying in select sectors.
