Delhi-NCR woke up to overcast skies and light showers on Tuesday as monsoon activity intensified across the region.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Tuesday and Wednesday, forecasting cloudy skies, intermittent rainfall, thunderstorms and gusty winds across the National Capital Region.

The IMD expects light rain at several places and moderate showers in isolated areas over the next two days, with rainfall likely to continue on Thursday despite the absence of a weather alert.

Meteorologists expect the fresh spell of rain to bring much-needed relief from the prevailing heat and humidity.

Meteorologists have predicted that daytime temperatures could fall by 5-6 degrees Celsius, making weather conditions significantly more pleasant across Delhi and adjoining regions.

Light showers on Monday evening brought brief relief from high humidity, prompting the IMD to warn of thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds.

Delhi has received 164.7 mm of rainfall this month, slightly below the normal 173.7 mm, but experts expect the shortfall to reduce as favourable monsoon conditions persist.

The yellow alert also covers neighbouring NCR cities, including Noida, Gurugram and Ghaziabad, where light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds is expected.

Despite isolated showers on Monday, humidity remained extremely high across the city, pushing the heat index to nearly 49 degrees Celsius and making conditions feel considerably hotter than the recorded temperature.

The temperature climbed to a maximum of 38.1°C, 3.2 degrees above normal, while the minimum settled at 28.6°C, 1.3 degrees above average.

Humidity levels remained between 76 and 100 per cent, making the weather feel increasingly uncomfortable.
