The Lok Sabha was adjourned till noon on Monday after noisy protests and sloganeering by Opposition members disrupted proceedings on the opening day of the Monsoon Session of Parliament.
Speaker Om Birla began the sitting by paying tribute to former Members of Parliament who had passed away.
Soon after the obituary references, Opposition MPs raised slogans, leading to disorder in the House.
As the protests continued, Speaker Birla repeatedly appealed to members to maintain decorum and reminded them that Parliament is the country’s highest democratic institution. He assured members that adequate time would be provided for everyone to present their views and participate in discussions.
Despite his appeals, the disruptions continued, forcing the Speaker to adjourn the House till noon.
Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi called for a productive Monsoon Session, stressing the need for constructive discussions and smooth functioning of Parliament at a time of global uncertainty.
Addressing the media before the session, PM Modi said Parliament has experienced members whose guidance is vital for the nation’s progress.
PM Modi urged MPs to ensure smooth proceedings, saying India’s youth expect Parliament to deliver results. He called for fact-based, constructive debates and urged members to respect every voice, adding that evidence-based discussions strengthen democracy.
The Monsoon Session will take up several key legislative and national issues.
The brief adjournment on the opening day highlighted the sharp differences between the government and the Opposition, setting the stage for a politically charged session ahead.
