The proposed demolition of Maulana Mohammad Ali Jauhar University in Rampur has sparked a political confrontation, with the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) accusing both the BJP-led Uttar Pradesh government and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav of acting in concert over the issue.
AIMIM spokesperson Shadab Chauhan alleged that the Samajwadi Party government left legal loopholes during the university’s construction, which the present administration is now using to justify demolition. He claimed the action is taking place with Akhilesh Yadav’s knowledge and consent.
Chauhan further accused the Samajwadi Party leader of remaining silent on issues affecting the minority community. He alleged that the party has repeatedly treated Muslims only as a vote bank and failed to defend their interests during incidents involving bulldozer action, encounters or mob lynching.
The AIMIM leader also claimed that the timing of the demolition notice coincided with Akhilesh Yadav’s overseas visit, allowing him to avoid political accountability. He questioned why the Samajwadi Party, despite having around 100 MLAs in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly, had not announced any protest against the proposed action.
The controversy intensified after the Rampur District Administration issued demolition notices for 38 of the 40 structures at Jauhar University, founded by senior Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan. Officials stated that the buildings lacked approved construction plans.
Chauhan described the proposed demolition as a major blow to the minority community. He also questioned why authorities responsible during the construction period had not faced action.
Chauhan further alleged that the government was targeting an existing minority educational institution rather than creating new ones, and questioned whether the move aligned with its ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas’ commitment.
