Argentina produced a spirited second-half comeback to defeat England 2-1 in the FIFA World Cup 2026 semi-final, keeping alive their hopes of defending the title.

Despite falling behind, the South American champions responded with two late goals to secure a place in Sunday’s final against Spain.

England looked in control after Anthony Gordon put his side ahead by converting a precise low delivery from Morgan Rogers.

The Three Lions defended resolutely for much of the match but were unable to withstand Argentina’s relentless pressure in the closing stages.

The opening period offered few clear-cut opportunities as both teams maintained a disciplined defensive shape.

England threatened first when John Stones headed narrowly wide from a free-kick delivered by Declan Rice, while Argentina’s best first-half effort came from Enzo Fernandez, whose long-range strike sailed over the crossbar.

Argentina began the second half with greater urgency, and Julian Alvarez tested goalkeeper Jordan Pickford with a well-struck effort.

England, however, broke the deadlock when Gordon calmly guided the ball into the net after an impressive move down the right wing.

As Argentina pushed forward, Pickford produced an excellent save to deny Nico Gonzalez, while Alexis Mac Allister rattled the post. Their persistence finally paid off when Lionel Messi found Fernandez following a short-corner routine, allowing the midfielder to fire a superb equaliser from outside the penalty area.

Moments before the final whistle, Messi created another opportunity by delivering a dangerous cross into the box, where substitute Lautaro Martinez rose highest to head home the winning goal.

The result sends Argentina into a second successive FIFA World Cup final, where they will take on Spain in New York, New Jersey.
