Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Australian Opposition Leader Angus Taylor in Melbourne on Friday during his three-day visit to Australia.
The leaders exchanged views on strengthening the India-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and explored opportunities to broaden cooperation across a range of sectors.
The meeting highlighted the bipartisan political support in Australia for expanding engagement with India.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said the discussions reflected the steady progress in bilateral ties and the shared resolve to deepen cooperation in areas of strategic importance.
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the interaction between the two leaders was constructive and focused on taking the partnership to the next level. He added that the cordial meeting showcased Australia’s cross-party commitment to reinforcing its relationship with India.
Key Engagements
The discussion with Taylor came amid a series of high-profile engagements during the Prime Minister’s visit.
PM Modi has already held talks with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, met Governor-General Sam Mostyn and Victoria Governor Margaret Gardner, attended the Australia-India CEO Forum, interacted with members of the Indian community in Melbourne, and met former Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison.
As part of his itinerary, Prime Minister Modi will also visit the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) with Prime Minister Albanese to unveil a new roadmap aimed at expanding sports cooperation between the two countries.
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said the initiative reflects the growing importance of sports in the bilateral relationship. He noted that India’s hosting of the 2030 Commonwealth Games and Australia’s preparations for the 2032 Olympic Games provide fresh opportunities for collaboration in athlete development, sporting infrastructure and knowledge sharing.
The Prime Minister’s visit to Australia underscores the growing depth of India-Australia relations, with both countries seeking to enhance cooperation in trade, investment, technology, defence, education and sports.
The meeting with the Opposition Leader further highlighted the strong political consensus in Australia in favour of strengthening long-term ties with India.
