Union Home Minister Amit Shah is likely to visit West Bengal on July 6 to participate in programmes commemorating the birth anniversary of Bharatiya Jana Sangh founder Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee.

Senior BJP leaders said Amit Shah will likely attend a special programme at the Biswa Bangla Convention Centre in New Town, Kolkata, as part of the birth anniversary celebrations.

State and central BJP leaders reviewed preparations for the event during a meeting at the party’s Salt Lake office in Kolkata on Monday evening.

Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari, West Bengal BJP President Samik Bhattacharya, along with senior BJP leaders Sunil Bansal, Mangal Pandey and Amit Malviya, attended the meeting.

The BJP-led government has announced several initiatives to honour Dr Mookerjee’s legacy. In the recently presented State Budget, it allocated ₹200 crore for the construction of a 125-foot statue at his ancestral home in Jirat, Hooghly district.

The project also includes the renovation of the ancestral house, beautification of the surrounding area, and the establishment of a library and memorial.

July 6 has also been declared a public holiday in Dr Mookerjee’s honour.

During his visit, Amit Shah will also lay the foundation stone for the proposed statue and attend other official events, while BJP leaders also reviewed organisational matters in West Bengal.

The proposed visit comes shortly after the nation observed Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee’s death anniversary on June 23, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and several senior leaders paying tribute to the educationist, barrister and politician, who played a significant role in shaping India’s political landscape after Independence.
