Muharram marks the beginning of the Islamic or Hijri New Year and is one of Islam’s four sacred months.
Ashura, observed on the 10th day of Muharram, also commemorates the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (AS), the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (SAW), at the Battle of Karbala.
Muslims across India and the world observe the month through prayers, mourning processions and religious gatherings.
The word ‘Muharram’ means ‘forbidden’, reflecting the month’s sacred status and its emphasis on prayer, worship and reflection.
Shia Muslims observe the first ten days with mourning, majlis and processions, while Sunni Muslims commonly fast on the 9th and 10th or the 10th and 11th of Muharram in keeping with Islamic tradition.
