Ambuja Cements, the Adani Group’s cement and building materials company, has entered into a partnership with UK-based clean technology firm Leilac Limited to develop a commercial-scale pathway for low-carbon cement production.
The project will be located at the company’s Sanghi plant in Sanghipuram, Kutch district, Gujarat.
The collaboration will assess Leilac’s carbon capture and hybrid electric heating technology, which is designed to reduce emissions while increasing the use of renewable electricity in cement manufacturing.
The technology also aims to reduce fuel consumption and create a pathway towards eliminating coal use, while allowing flexible adoption of alternative fuels.
The project forms part of Ambuja Cements’ broader decarbonisation strategy and supports its Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi)-validated commitment to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
Ambuja Cements will implement the commercial demonstration project at its 6.6 million tonnes per annum Sanghi facility.
If the project succeeds, the company could expand it by seven to eight times its initial scale and capture more than one million tonnes of carbon dioxide annually.
The companies believe the project could establish a scalable model for low-carbon cement production in India and international markets.

He noted that the partnership reflects the company’s commitment to evaluating next-generation solutions that reduce process emissions while improving energy efficiency.
Daniel Rennie, Chief Executive Officer of Leilac Limited, said the collaboration aims to demonstrate an economical and replicable solution for low-carbon cement production. He added that the project could help create a future-ready model for the global cement industry.
The partnership strengthens Ambuja Cements’ efforts to expand renewable energy use and accelerate industrial decarbonisation. It also represents a significant step towards developing commercially viable carbon capture solutions for one of the world’s most emissions-intensive industries.
