International Yoga Day: PM Modi Praises Public Participation At Kolkata Event

On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the enthusiastic participation of people from different sections of society in the International Day of Yoga celebrations at Kolkata’s Red Road, describing the event as a strong reflection of Yoga’s relevance in everyday life.

Sharing his thoughts on the social media platform X after leading the programme, PM Modi said the large turnout demonstrated the growing acceptance of Yoga across communities. He noted that this year’s theme, ‘Yoga For Healthy Ageing’, underlined the role of Yoga in helping people remain fit and healthy throughout their lives.

The Prime Minister had earlier addressed participants at the 12th International Day of Yoga event, where he called on citizens to incorporate Yoga into their daily routines rather than treating it as an activity reserved for special occasions. He said regular practice contributes to physical health, mental balance and overall well-being.

Speaking about the theme of healthy ageing, PM Modi said Yoga can help individuals maintain their energy and productivity as they grow older. He encouraged families to embrace the practice collectively, stating that long-term commitment to Yoga can support an active and healthy lifestyle in later years.

Bengal’s Yoga Heritage

The Prime Minister drew attention to Bengal’s historic association with Yoga and recalled the contribution of Swami Vivekananda in introducing its principles to a global audience.

Referring to Vivekananda’s teachings, PM Modi said the spiritual leader viewed Yoga as a path towards self-development, happiness and liberation, adding that the tradition remains deeply rooted in the cultural heritage of West Bengal.

PM Modi emphasised the broader significance of Yoga and said people should not view it solely as a tool for personal wellness.

According to him, Yoga can contribute to building a stronger and more positive future for society, making it important for people to integrate it into their everyday lives.

The International Day of Yoga is observed annually on June 21 and has grown into a global movement promoting health, fitness and holistic well-being.
