Global crude oil prices fell nearly 1 per cent on Wednesday as investors reacted to growing expectations of a potential US-Iran understanding that could ease tensions in West Asia and restore stability to key shipping routes, including the Strait of Hormuz.

International benchmark Brent crude declined 0.72 per cent to 78.39 dollars per barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) slipped nearly 1 per cent to 75.35 dollars per barrel amid sustained selling pressure in energy markets.

Sentiment weakened after reports emerged of a US-Iran interim framework aimed at de-escalating the conflict in the region.

The proposed agreement extends the ceasefire and supports talks on long-term stability, including nuclear safeguards and limited easing of restrictions on Iran. It is also expected to restore normal shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, easing concerns over global oil supply disruptions.

The Indian rupee strengthened by 31 paise during the session, trading at 94.29 against the US dollar compared with 94.56 in the previous trading day, reflecting improved risk sentiment and easing crude-related pressure on the currency.

Market experts noted that foreign institutional investor (FII) outflows have begun to moderate, supported by a firmer rupee and expectations of further currency stability. They added that sustained strength in the rupee, alongside softening crude prices, could encourage renewed foreign inflows into Indian markets.

Analysts further said that expectations of capital inflows through deposit routes and improved macroeconomic stability may support the currency, potentially reducing FII selling pressure and improving overall market resilience in the near term.
