India launched their Women’s T20 World Cup campaign with an emphatic victory, defeating Pakistan by 64 runs at Edgbaston on Sunday.

The result handed India two crucial points and strengthened their position with an impressive net run rate.

India produced a strong batting performance to finish on 170/6 from 20 overs.

Smriti Mandhana played a composed and attacking knock of 68 to anchor the innings, while skipper Harmanpreet Kaur added a valuable 36.

Richa Ghosh accelerated in the closing stages, striking 34 runs to help India post a formidable total.

Pakistan’s bowling attack found some success through Fatima Sana and Sadia Iqbal, who picked up two wickets each.

Chasing 171, Pakistan made an aggressive start and raced to 52/1 in the powerplay, recording their highest powerplay score against India in Women’s T20 World Cup history.

Muneeba Ali looked in good touch and took advantage of early chances offered by India, while Gull Feroza also contributed positively at the top.

Despite the encouraging opening phase, Pakistan were unable to maintain the momentum as India’s spin bowlers steadily took control of the contest.

Deepti Sharma turned the match decisively in India’s favour with a superb spell that yielded career-best figures of 5/10.

The experienced off-spinner consistently built pressure and struck at regular intervals to derail Pakistan’s chase.

N Sree Charani complemented Deepti brilliantly, returning figures of 3/21 and removing several important batters.

A direct-hit run-out from Deepti ended Muneeba Ali’s innings and sparked a dramatic collapse.

Pakistan’s middle and lower order struggled to cope with India’s disciplined spin attack, losing their remaining wickets rapidly.

Deepti wrapped up the innings by claiming the final wickets as Pakistan were dismissed for 106 in 17 overs, sealing a comprehensive victory for India and also extending their impressive record against their rivals.
