Delhi Weather Update: Showers To Keep Temperatures In Check This Week

The India Meteorological Department has projected a week of wet weather for Delhi-NCR, with rain and thunderstorms likely to affect the region over the next several days.

Meteorologists expect the prevailing weather conditions to prevent temperatures from crossing 40°C until at least 5 June.

The recent spell of relatively comfortable weather has already brought some relief to residents dealing with the summer season.

Delhi registered a maximum temperature of 37.7°C on Tuesday, placing it 2.3°C below the normal level for this period.

IMD observations showed that multiple monitoring stations across the city continued to record temperatures below seasonal averages.

Ayanagar reported a maximum temperature of 36.1°C. Safdarjung recorded 37.7°C, with the minimum temperature settling at 26.8°C. Lodhi Road registered 36°C, while Palam and The Ridge recorded 35.9°C and 37.2°C, respectively.

Most stations reported temperatures between 2.5°C and 5°C lower than the usual seasonal range.

Alongside the local forecast, the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) announced that warming sea-surface temperatures in the tropical Pacific are contributing to the development of El Niño conditions that could influence weather patterns worldwide.

“We need to prepare for a potentially strong El Niño event, which will exacerbate drought and heavy rainfall and increase the risk of heatwaves both on land and in the ocean,” WMO Secretary-General Celeste Saulo said at a press conference in Geneva.

The WMO noted that the 2023-24 El Niño episode ranked among the strongest on record and played a role in pushing global temperatures to unprecedented levels in 2024.

Saulo said meteorological agencies will track developments closely in the months ahead. She added that updates will be shared with governments, humanitarian organisations, and climate-sensitive sectors.

Saulo stressed that reliable seasonal outlooks and early warning systems can help authorities prepare for extreme weather events. She further noted that such measures can reduce the impact of severe weather on lives and livelihoods.
