CJI Surya Kant Administers Oath To Five Newly Appointed Supreme Court Judges

Chief Justice of India Surya Kant on Tuesday administered the oath of office to five newly appointed judges of the Supreme Court, taking the apex court closer to its expanded sanctioned strength.

Justices Sheel Nagu, Shree Chandrashekhar, Sanjeev Sachdeva and Arun Palli, along with senior advocate V Mohana, took the oath as judges after the Centre approved their appointments based on recommendations made by the Supreme Court Collegium.

The Union government cleared the appointments on Monday following Collegium meetings held on May 22 and May 27.

Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal announced that President Droupadi Murmu appointed the five judges after consulting the Chief Justice of India.

The Supreme Court Collegium recommended the elevation of four High Court Chief Justices and senior advocate V Mohana to the apex court.

Justice Sheel Nagu, Justice Shree Chandrashekhar, Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva and Justice Arun Palli have served as Chief Justices of various High Courts, while V Mohana has handled several constitutional, civil and service law cases before the Supreme Court.

The appointments come weeks after the government increased the sanctioned strength of Supreme Court judges from 33 to 37, excluding the Chief Justice of India.

The induction of the five judges is expected to strengthen the apex court’s capacity to handle an increasing number of cases and enhance the delivery of justice across the country.
