Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday described Myanmar as a key pillar of India’s ‘Neighbourhood First’, ‘Act East’ and Indo-Pacific policies after holding wide-ranging discussions with Myanmar President U Min Aung Hlaing in New Delhi.
Following the meeting, PM Modi shared details on X and welcomed the Myanmar President’s decision to choose India for his first overseas visit since assuming office. He also noted that President Hlaing began the visit in Bodh Gaya, seeking blessings at the sacred Buddhist site.
The two leaders reviewed the entire spectrum of bilateral relations and explored opportunities to strengthen collaboration across several strategic sectors.
Their discussions focused on expanding cooperation in trade, rare earth minerals, healthcare, connectivity projects, heritage conservation, and capacity-building initiatives.
PM Modi stated on X that both nations also agreed on bilateral relations and discussed ways to deepen engagement in maritime security, cybersecurity, and other emerging areas of mutual interest.

During the talks, President Hlaing reaffirmed Myanmar’s commitment that its territory would not be used for activities detrimental to India’s security interests.
The assurance formed an important component of the bilateral dialogue.
PM Modi reiterated India’s support for Myanmar’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. He also backed Myanmar-led efforts to promote peace, stability, national reconciliation, and socio-economic progress.
Additionally, the Prime Minister offered continued cooperation based on mutual respect and a longstanding friendship between the two countries. President Hlaing appreciated India’s constructive assistance and support.
President Droupadi Murmu also met the visiting leader at Rashtrapati Bhavan. She highlighted the deep-rooted Buddhist heritage and centuries-old people-to-people connections that strengthen bilateral ties.
President Murmu further described Myanmar as India’s gateway to Southeast Asia and reaffirmed India’s enduring support for peace and reconciliation in the neighbouring nation.
