Mann Ki Baat: PM Modi Celebrates Return Of Historic Chola Artefacts

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday described the return of rare Chola-era copper plates from the Netherlands as a moment of immense pride for India and highlighted the importance of preserving the nation’s rich cultural heritage.

Speaking during the 134th episode of Mann Ki Baat, PM Modi encouraged young people to develop an interest in astronomy and scientific exploration.

Recalling his recent visit to the Netherlands, PM Modi said the return of the historic artefacts had generated excitement among Indians worldwide, especially within the global Tamil community. He noted that the copper plates have attracted widespread attention because of their historical significance.

The collection includes 21 large and three small copper plates linked to Rajendra Chola I and a vow fulfilled by his father, Rajaraja Chola.

The inscriptions record the donation of Anaimangalam village to a Buddhist monastery and offer valuable insights into the achievements of the Chola Empire.

PM Modi said the copper plates showcase the Chola Empire’s maritime strength and links with Southeast Asia, reflecting India’s rich heritage and global influence. He also highlighted the discovery of three ancient copper plates in Malhar, Chhattisgarh, believed to be nearly 1,500 years old and valuable for understanding the governance, religion and culture of the Panduvanshi period.

Emphasising India’s long tradition of astronomy, the Prime Minister praised organisations promoting scientific learning and encouraged students to join astronomy clubs, visit planetariums and pursue hobbies that foster curiosity and continuous learning.
