IMD Issues Yellow Alert As Severe Heatwave Continues Across Delhi-NCR

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Delhi-NCR as intense heatwave conditions are expected to continue over the next three days.

The weather department warned that residents are likely to face extremely high temperatures, strong hot winds and rising discomfort levels from May 19 to May 22.

Delhi recorded its hottest day of the season on Monday, with temperatures nearing 44 degrees Celsius in several parts of the city.

The Safdarjung observatory, considered the capital’s primary weather station, recorded a maximum temperature of 43.4 degrees Celsius.

The IMD said intense daytime heat and strong surface winds will increase discomfort across Delhi-NCR, while warmer nights may bring little relief.

The department forecast maximum temperatures of around 44 degrees Celsius on May 19 and 20, with heatwave conditions and hot winds continuing during the afternoon and evening hours.

Temperatures may dip slightly to around 43 degrees Celsius on May 21 and 22, but hot and dry winds will continue across the region.

Humidity levels between 35 and 50 per cent may further increase discomfort.

The department has advised people to avoid stepping outdoors during peak afternoon hours unless necessary, as prolonged exposure to extreme heat could affect health.

Health experts have urged children, senior citizens and people with existing medical conditions to take extra precautions during the heatwave.

Doctors recommended drinking water regularly, staying hydrated, avoiding direct sunlight and limiting outdoor activities to reduce the risk of dehydration and heatstroke.

The IMD, however, indicated that weather conditions may gradually improve from May 23 onwards, with clearer skies and a possible reduction in the intensity of the heatwave.
