The cancellation of NEET-UG 2026 has intensified scrutiny over the credibility of India’s competitive examination system.
Authorities annulled the nationwide medical entrance examination after investigators uncovered extensive irregularities linked to organised leak networks. More than 22 lakh medical aspirants were affected by the unprecedented decision.
The controversy erupted after the May 3 examination, when investigators discovered that a leaked ‘guess paper’ circulated through encrypted WhatsApp and Telegram groups.
Reports confirmed that nearly 120 questions matched the actual paper.
Investigators revealed that fraudsters sold leaked materials for amounts ranging between Rs 20,000 and Rs 5 lakh.
Rajasthan’s Special Operations Group exposed the digital leak operation during the probe.
India’s medical entrance examinations have repeatedly faced allegations of malpractice.
In 2015, the Supreme Court cancelled the All India Pre-Medical Test after answer leaks surfaced across multiple states.
Similar controversies emerged in 2014, 2017, 2021 and 2024.
This time, the National Testing Agency cancelled the entire examination to protect the integrity of medical admissions.
The Centre later transferred the investigation to the Central Bureau of Investigation to dismantle organised syndicates behind the breach.
The controversy has triggered severe emotional distress among students preparing for the re-examination.
Legal experts stated that courts usually permit cancellation only when irregularities become systemic and impossible to isolate from genuine candidates.
Authorities also warned students against fake Telegram and WhatsApp leak groups that exploit panic during examination season.
Experts stressed the need for stricter audits, tamper-proof systems, transparent grievance mechanisms and stronger enforcement under the Public Examinations Act, 2024.
