Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay on Monday completed the formalities of entering the State Assembly by taking oath as a legislator during the inaugural session of the newly elected House.
Pro-tem Speaker Karuppiah conducted the oath-taking ceremony for members of the 17th Tamil Nadu Assembly at the Assembly Hall following the conclusion of the recent state elections.
Vijay, who assumed office as Chief Minister a day earlier, took the constitutional affirmation in Tamil while being sworn in as the representative from the Perambur constituency.
During his swearing-in as Chief Minister on Sunday, Vijay had invoked the name of God, but on Monday, he opted for a formal constitutional pledge.
The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam leader had secured victories from both Perambur and Trichy East constituencies in the Assembly polls. He later decided to retain Perambur and vacated the Trichy East seat, which will now require a by-election.
Several newly elected TVK legislators also took the oath during the session. Senior party leader N Anand sworn in from the T Nagar constituency, while Aadhav Arjuna entered the Assembly as MLA from Villivakkam.
The first sitting of the new Assembly witnessed enthusiastic scenes after TVK registered a major electoral breakthrough in its debut Assembly election.
The party emerged as the largest in the 234-member House and later formed the government with the backing of its allies.
Addressing the members, Karuppiah urged legislators to fulfil the trust placed in them by the public and work sincerely for social welfare. He also referred to the ideals of leaders, including Periyar EV Ramasamy, K Kamaraj, Velu Nachiyar and Anjalai Ammal, while speaking about governance and public service.
